To the editor: SB 501 will make criminals out of hundreds of thousands of law abiding Oregonians. This “feel good” legislation originating with Portland students and introduced by Portland Democrats will do nothing to prevent people bent on violence from committing violence. Limiting ammunition purchases to 20 rounds per month is ridiculous.

A bill intended to enhance the safety of hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts would establish designated target shooting areas on some Department of Natural Resources-managed lands.

DUFUR – Of the eight Dufur Ranger shooters, Peyton Neal and Kyler Powell stood tall under the pressure and under the sweltering 98-degree weather. Neal and Powell each claimed second place to lead Dufur High School at the Oregon High School Clay Target State Tournament last weekend at the Hillsboro Trap and Skeet Club in Hillsboro.

With the pressure rising, Maupin native Jason Hull stayed calm, cool and collected. Hull sank 22 of 25 free throws to defeat Armani Smith, Chatz Dollente and Christian Cordona at the Elk’s Northwest Regional finals held on March 11 at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash.

The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office is asking for public assistance to locate Cory Widner, 24, a person of interest in a shooting investigation. Early Thursday morning, Oct. 22, a man in his mid-20s was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside a trailer in Celilo Village, about 12 miles east of The Dalles. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of family members. Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene after receiving a 9-1-1 call about 2:30 a.m. that a man with  a “long gun” was inside the residence.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A blast that killed one man near U.S. Highway 26 between Portland and Mount Hood is believed to have been caused by a mixture that is used to make exploding targets for firearms practice, authorities said Friday.
