PORTLAND, Ore. — An emergency vaccine could help protect California condors against a virus that killed more than 20 of the endangered birds last spring. Early results released today from a historic clinical trial offer hope: 60% of condors receiving the vaccine produced measurable antibodies, which should provide some protection against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

A searchable database of immigrants’ names, scratched or painted on rocks along the Oregon Trail, arrived at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum on Aug. 28. The collection is donated by photographer Jim Henderson, who spent years along the Trail photographing rocks with cross-pollarized light to reveal many hidden names.
