Students from around the Gorge participated in the 6th annual Google Wind Challenge Saturday, March 16 at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center in The Dalles. This year, more than 160 students representing 35 high school and middle school teams competed to build the competition’s top wind turbines.
The Dancing with the Gorge Stars Mirror Ball Trophy winner was Gorge Mickens from MCMC, left, performing Ballroom Hip Hop to MC Hammer’s “You Can’t Touch This.” Second place runner-up was Maria Peña of North Central Public Health District, right, performing the salsa to Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie.”
Through the year, local sports fans can appreciate the greatness of these athletes’ accomplishments in every game they play. When looking at the past year and what transpired, it is a sensational year of records falling, champions crowned and teams banding together for fantastic finishes during district and state action.
DUFUR – Since taking home a Big Sky Conference district championship in 2014, the Dufur volleyball team has had three consecutive runner-up finishes. Second-year coach Kristin Whitley fields a roster of three seniors, five juniors, a sophomore and a freshman, including all-league winners Sydnee Byers, Trinity Blake and Mikayla Kelly that aspire to take a monumental step forward.
A little more than two weeks is all that stands between the first of two basketball tournaments organized by Greg Cummings and the Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy.
