Cherry harvest is underway in the Columbia River Gorge and there are plenty of pickers despite worries that President Donald Trump’s focus on border security would cause laborers from Mexico and Central America to stay home. “For the most part, all of my growers say they’ve got plenty of people — they’re even turning workers away,” said Jeff Heater, field man for The Dalles Fruit Company, which runs a packing plant in Dallesport.

My cherry memories are older than Jim Goff’s memories of Dalles cherries. (Could that be possible?) As a little girl we had cherries. We had trees in the yard that were remarkable. They had two kinds of cherries on each tree. The small orchard that was on the other end of the block had different kinds of trees in the orchard.

Practicing attorney Bridget Bailey is running for a seat on the Wasco County Board of Commissioners this year, and said she intends to bring her experience working as a small business owner and fourth-generation cherry grower and packer to bring a strong new voice to represent the county.
