The 11th annual Columbia Gorge Peace Village last month drew a record 150 campers to Mosier School for a week of active learning about social justice, environmental citizenship, wellness, collaboration, media literacy, and self-empowerment.
To the editor: On June 3, 2016, a Union Pacific oil train derailed in Mosier, exploding in flames. The train derailed just several hundred feet from Mosier School, almost incinerating hundreds of children. These Mosier residents are just a few miles away from Rep. Mark Johnson’s district; one would think he would be leading the charge to protect our communities and our rivers from the threat of oil by rail. Instead, Johnson voted to oppose common-sense measures to improve oil train emergency response and hold railroads accountable.
A column of smoke scarred the sky early Friday afternoon after a Union Pacific oil train, containing Bakken crude oil from Idaho on its way to Tacoma, derailed in Mosier on tracks paralleling Interstate 84 near Mosier’s wastewater treatment plant. No injuries have been reported as a result of the accident.
Mosier Schools holds its biggest fundraiser of the year today — the Made for Mosier Art Auction and Gala. As a charter school, Mosier gets 80 percent of its funding from the state and county, with the rest coming from fundraisers. The goal is to raise at least $30,000 at this gala.
