It’s very likely that this season could be similar to last year in terms of who the top Big Sky League girls basketball playoff contenders will be in 2023.
The Big Sky West Division champion Trout Lake High Mustangs and runner-up South Wasco will likely be the top squads again this season. Big Sky Champion Echo High Cougars (19-6 last year) and the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (16-6) each have starters returning from their 1A state playoff teams.
MORO – Over the last three years, the Sherman Huskies have secured their spot as one of the state’s premier baseball programs. In that span, the team is 51-19 overall and 29-8 in league, while outscoring opposing teams by a 637-348 margin with state quarterfinal berths in 2017 and 2018. This spring, Sherman went 16-4 and amassed a perfect 9-0 record in league, so it was a given that the all-league list would be dominated by Husky players.
MORO – Back after a four-year break from coaching, Mike Somnis took a look at the size and physicality of his offensive line and knew he wanted to instill a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust philosophy.
The Sherman baseball team nearly put up identical numbers from a season ago, with four more league wins, one more win overall, and a quarterfinal state berth, and as a result, eight players picked up Blue Mountain Conference honors, including five first-team winners.
The No. 7-ranked Huskies erased a five-run, fifth-inning deficit with a 13-run sixth inning, followed by a two-run seventh to complete the 15-5 comeback triumph Saturday in a Blue Mountain Conference baseball semifinal played Saturday at Bob White Field in Pendleton.
MORO – Ace pitcher Brett Troutman and the Sherman Huskies were two outs away from sealing a comeback win and moving a step closer to winning the Blue Mountain Conference. But in the top of the seventh inning, a bad bounce single, followed by another single and a bases-clearing double by Austin Rice turned the tide in Irrigon’s favor. Rice’s late heroics, and 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief by Hayden White gave the No. 7 Knights a 3-2 victory over the No. 8 Huskies in a league baseball game played Tuesday in Moro.
