Local area basketball players donned their team uniforms for the final time of their high school careers to compete in the 19th annual 1A Senior All-Star Series last weekend at Sisters High School.

The undefeated South Wasco County High Redsides (10-0 league, 22-0 overall) won the Big Sky District championship with a, 42-40, win over the Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (9-0, 19-1) Friday at The Dalles High School’s Kurtz Gym.

MAUPIN – Last season, it took seven games for the South Wasco County Redsides to win two games. So far, SWC has already won one game in a pair of tournament contests and this up and coming group is aiming for more consistent play to climb higher and higher in the Big Sky Conference standings.

Playing short-handed, South Wasco County head coach Jim Hull made a defensive switch with Marshall Bell at the top of the 1-3-1 formation. SWC stayed close with Horizon Christian through the first three quarters, erasing a 27-20 halftime deficit with an 18-12 third-quarter rally to get to within a 39-38 deficit, but the Hawks put together a 17-11 spurt in the final period to secure a 56-49 victory Tuesday in Maupin.

With its size and athleticism, Pacific High School got off to a quick start and never looked back, as a 34-5 first-quarter lead paved the way for a 61-26 victory at the Pacific Crossover Boys’ Basketball Tournament Friday in Port Orford.

On the final day of the John Howey Memorial Tournament, South Wasco County trailed Trout Lake, Wash. by a 21-12 score at the half, and could only muster nine second-half points in a 56-21 boys basketball loss Saturday in Maupin.

MORO – Playing without graduated seniors Kyle Fields, Max Martin, Maverick Winslow and Isaiah Coles, the two-time defending state champion Sherman Huskies kicked off their offseason slate in style with eight consecutive wins, including a finals romp over Jordan Valley, to score first place at the Sherman Invitational ending Sunday in Moro. “We are super proud that we could go out and get the job done once again,” said all-state point guard Jacob Justesen.

MAUPIN – The Dufur Rangers captured their seventh straight win to move up to No. 10 in the 1A rankings after a 56-33 victory over South Wasco County Saturday in a Big Sky Conference boys’ basketball game played in Maupin.
