An amazing confluence of volunteers, racers, blue sky, warm weather, amazing scenery and two leagues coming together to combine forces resulted in a fantastic day of Nordic racing for Oregon high school athletes.
Hood River Valley Nordic was joined by Summit, South Bend, Redmond, St. Mary’s Academy, and Corvallis at last Saturday’s Teacup Classic race, hosted by St. Mary’s Academy. The morning brought numb fingers and rosy cheeks, the sky was clear, it was a cool 7 degrees, and no wind was present.

Grey jays leapt from branches, swooping in to steal bits of pastries as the main square outside the Teacup’s Ray Garey Cabin bustled with ski enthusiasts. A vibrant gathering of junior racers, coaches and their parents — all visually and verbally expressing their excitement — crowded around waxing benches, contemplating temperature and wax effectiveness.
The Hood River Valley Nordic team traveled to Bend over the weekend, where it found enough snow to continue the season’s OHSNO league race series. The race was originally scheduled for Mt. Hood, and was planned to be a “Pursuit” style race with both classic and skate legs, but the lack of snowpack and dire weather predictions forced a move to central Oregon, where the mountains have a bit more snow.
In just four years, the Hood River Valley Nordic team has gone from a fledgling group of high school skiers with little experience and hodgepodge gear to a top contender in the Oregon High School Nordic Organization’s winter racing circuit.
