Hood River Valley’s slim chances of qualifying for the Class 5A boys state soccer playoffs ended Oct. 27 at home, where the Eagles and Putnam played to a 1-1 tie in a Northwest Oregon Conference match.

A battle between two of the top water polo teams in Oregon took place on Sunday, with Hood River coming out on top for the first time ever in tournament play. Hood River beat Bend in a championship game that would need extra time to decide a winner.
The HRV boys water polo team’s quest for a 5A state championship were thwarted in the final nine seconds of an exciting tied-up semifinal game against Summit, when the HRV team was denied the opportunity for a penalty throw by what was proven later to be an erroneous referee decision, said HRV coach Dave Cameron.
In an energetic battle between the state’s top two ranked teams, senior forward Jaime Frias made a speedy run up the center of the field, took a perfect through-ball from midfielder Diego Rueda, outran two defenders in chase and made a quick dribble around a charging Summit goalie for an open shot at the net.
At this point in the season, claiming the Columbia River Conference championship isn’t much of a surprise for the Hood River Valley High School varsity boys soccer team, but it’s still cause to pause and celebrate before taking aim at its grander goal of bringing home the first state title in team history.
