In order to keep their season going, The Dalles girls’ soccer team had a long road trip for a clash Saturday against No. 11 Hillsboro.
The Lady Spartans and Riverhawks played to a standstill through the first 20 minutes of the first half, but then Hillsboro scored two goals in a span of 40 seconds and added another one at the 32-minute mark on its way to a 5-1 victory in a 5A state play-in soccer match played at Ron Tonkin Field.
Ahead by three goals to start the second stanza, Hillsboro would tack on one goal at the 47-minute mark to make it 4-0, but then TD got one on the scoreboard six minutes later.
Senior Hannah Walasavage had a corner kick and lofted a pass high in the air for Brooke McCall, whose header made it past the Hillsboro goalkeeper into the back of the net.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, the Lady Spartans scored another goal to cap the scoring summary.
“I am happy with the effort and I feel the girls did a great job this year preparing themselves and playing hard in matches,” said TD head coach Colby Tonn.
The Riverhawks started the season 2-4, and then went on a 0-4 stretch in October, before beating Pendleton 4-1 to give them a shot at the postseason.
With a new defensive core and several new players on the roster, the Hawks showed some glimpses of positive outcomes.
The Riverhawks had shutouts of Redmond and Benson and also defeated Madras.
Of their 10 losses, six were by two goals or less, so it shows the Hawks were very competitive while playing a tough preseason and league schedule.
“I am very proud of my team and how we finished the whole season,” said senior Marina Diaz. “We started out really not as a team, but then at the end, we came together more. We gave it our all towards the end and it has been really great season working with all of them.”
The Hawks lose seven seniors to graduation, including Monique Mendiola, Karina Heredia, Emma Smith-Ell, Jennifer Bonham, Marte Solberg, Diaz and Walasavage, a perennial all-league winner.
Ivorie Taylor, Alexa Tapia, Giselle Manzo, Molly Taylor, McCall, Addie Klindt and Emma Weir and a few others make up just a few of the marquee names who will step back into the varsity mix next fall for Coach Tonn and the Riverhawks.
“I am so excited for them,” Walasavage said. “Addie does so great in goal, so it gives me hope for a goalie because goalies are really hard to find. We have some really good freshmen. Some are really rough around the edges, but with a little bit of coaching, they are going to be great. Once they get to their senior years, they are all going to be unstoppable and I think they are going to do really well.”
