The Oregon Department of Transportation has installed fencing beneath two overpasses in The Dalles to prevent transients from camping under them. “We don’t like doing it; it’s not a situation we like to be in,” said ODOT spokesman Peter Murphy. But the camping creates a situation “that simply has to be taken care of.”

Multiple crashes on I-84 contribute to traffic backup Thursday

Westbound traffic came to a virtual stop for an hour Thursday after two crashes a mile or so west of Mosier, and a third at the same location eastbound. Cars were backed up for several miles in high-90s temperatures. Only one injury was reported in the three accidents.
