THE DALLES — A string of six straight state meet appearances and three Class 4A state trophies is on the line this season for The Dalles High School’s (TDHS) boys cross country team.
Coach Jill Bell’s squad opened their competitive season Aug. 30 in their team fundraiser, the Riverhawks Run, where runners could be clocked running a mile, 3,000 meters, or 5,000 meters. For some Riverhawk athletes, the run served as an indicator of the effectiveness of their summer training regimes.
Senior Tyson Long figures to lead the Riverhawks this fall; he is a three-time state meet competitor who won the Tri-Valley Conference district meet his sophomore season and was second a year ago. Long was the fastest finisher in the 5K race this past weekend in 17 minutes, 31 seconds.
Senior teammates Noah Preston and Zeb Stelzer ran 17:47 and 18:04, respectively. They also helped The Dalles win the 2024 runner-up trophy at the 4A state meet in Eugene. Also returning are varsity runners Aiden Erickson and Luke Sorenson. The four runners finished 17th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at district last season.
TDHS has qualified for state six successive seasons. In addition to the 2024 runner-up finish (behind Newport), the Riverhawks also were third in 2023, first in 2022, and sixth (Class 5A) in 2021.
New to the Tri-Valley this fall will be the absence of The Dalles’ rival Crook County, which moved up to Class 5A. The Cowboys and Riverhawks had played their version of can-you-top-this in recent years. For example, Crook County won the 2024 district team crown, but The Dalles topped the Cowboys at the state meet.
