I write this letter in amazement. The other day the city of The Dalles did something that damaged my driveway somewhat. In 32 years of living in The Dalles it never seemed necessary to engage with the city. It always seemed that if I did my thing that everything was okay.
But, if the city flushed the new fire hydrant they had installed one or two more times my road would be ruined. It seemed prudent to notify the city that there was a problem and, hopefully, they would do something different next time.
So, about 11 a.m. the other day I walked into city hall and found Carol Trautman and she was very friendly and helped me find the road department and who I should talk to.
Walking into the road department, I was told that the gentleman I was looking for was in a meeting so I waited 10 minutes and then he was out of the meeting so I spoke to him about my concern at about 11:30 a.m.
He agreed to meet me at my house at 12:30 p.m. to look at the concern. We met, looked at the damage to my gravel road, discussed life and then he said that he would look into getting it fixed, but it could be a week or so before he could get it done.
Within 90 minutes, the road had new gravel on it, was graded excellently, was better than it had been for years and they were gone.
Within a few hours of the time I walked into city hall I had a road fixed, a problem solved and the city of The Dalles had exceeded all expectations. Thank you Ray Johnson and city for being great partners in making The Dalles a better place to live.
