To the editor:
I served my country in Korea during 1951-52. I have a master’s degree in United States history. Over 32 years, I taught in middle school, high school and college. I always directed my students to ways of expressing patriotism and to the conditions that made people from around the world want to come to live in our country.
When I read the following words of entertainer John Legend about the children at the border, I wept for my country:
“Most of these children will never see their parents again. Most of these parents will never see their children again. And most never got to say goodbye. Children are left to wonder why their mothers haven’t come to get them. Parents are left to agonize, never knowing if their child is physically/emotionally sick, safe – or crying for them.”
Our country can do better than this. It is certainly not consistent with the values I taught. John Legend continued: “For the sake of all that’s good in this world, no American should stand/ignore this atrocity on Father’s Day — or any other day.” Thank you, John Legend, for speaking out.
