Local thrift stores have been battling it out over which store should get your donated stuff. A recent postcard mailing, newspaper advertisements, and billboards urge me to make a decision based on the needs these organizations are able to meet outside of the store.
I can appreciate the good that organizations can do in the local community with the money their stores earn. However, this is not what drives my donating decisions. Instead, I tend to bring my donations along to the thrift stores where I choose to shop. Is your organization’s store a place I wish to be? Does it have decent prices? Is it clean? Does it have a bathroom I’m not afraid to let my children use? Is there a fitting room where we can try on clothes so it’s not hit-or-miss buying? Can I access all areas of the store with my stroller? Is it easy to park? These are what will draw me to the store, and with me, my donations, as well as the money from my purchases.
In the end, it is not only donations of goods that allow an organization to help the community in other ways, it is also people coming in to buy those goods.
