To the editor:
In response to the “Where’s the Pride?” letter to the editor printed Tuesday, July 22, I would like to point out that keeping lawns lush and green throughout the summer season requires massive amounts of water — especially when it is as hot and dry outside as it has been.
It is completely understandable that many folks are choosing to conserve water rather than to boast lush lawns nowadays, both for the sake of their pocketbooks and the environment.
My personal belief is that lawns are an enormous waste of the extremely precious resource that is fresh water, anyway – why not spend all of that time, money, and water on trees, flower gardens, and/or fruit and vegetable gardens instead? Those benefit people, wildlife, and the environment, whereas lawns benefit essentially no one — plus they look beautiful!
I cannot tell you how often I see people watering sidewalks and streets with their sprinklers rather than their actual lawns, and in the middle of the day to boot, when most of that water evaporates before it could even hope to saturate their lawns.
In conclusion, I wish people would start growing more trees, gardens, and food rather than lawns, and start paying more attention to how much water they waste! If that were to happen, I think everyone would win.
