Today we see a great deal of media coverage of non-traditional family configurations but see little attention given to traditional opposite-sex marriages into which children can be born.
According to the Williams Institute, it is estimated that 3.8 percent of American individuals are LGBT.
The traditional family model still represents the foundation of our society.
Our fear is that the rising generation is seeing fewer and fewer representations of traditional, successful families and their contribution in the media.
Where is the front page attention and celebration of traditional families?
Our belief is that: “marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of his children . . . Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity…
“Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children.
“Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs [and] to teach them to love and serve one another and observe the commandments of God ...” (The Family; A Proclamation to the World, 1995)
We are deeply saddened by recent tragedies involving our LGBT brothers and sisters. Our hope is that as we become more sensitive to the diversity in families and individuals within society, let’s not abandon nor neglect to hold up the standard that does still exist.
We proclaim the sanctity of traditional marriage as an institution ordained of God and its importance as the foundation upon which our nation is built.
