The Anderson Construction Co. of Portland was the successful bidder for construction work on the new Hood River High School, to be built on the nine acre tract purchased from the Mortimer estate, the bid being $130,634. Sturgis & Sturgis bid $6097 for the plumbing and were successful. The heating contract went to Rushlight Hastorf & Lord Inc., on a bid of $16,443. All bids accepted were the lowest of many submitted.

A special meeting of the upper Mill creek school board has been called for the purpose of considering plans for rebuilding the schoolhouse, which burned to the ground a few days ago. Members of the board were unable to explain the cause of the blaze. The building, a one-room school, was fully insured.
Direct motor coach connections with all principal cities in central Idaho and eastern Oregon and Washington became possible today through a chance in schedules involving the Columbia Gorge Motor coach bus...
Two persons were injured and 12 cars more or less damaged in a series of week-end automobile accidents on the highways and the city streets.

The warehouses here are preparing for a big harvest. By indications the apple crop will be one of the largest in its history. Mr. Baker’s refrigerator plant will be in readiness, and all apples entrusted to him will be handled with great care, packed and shipped.

1946 — 80 years ago
Tentative plans for a rural fire district, the first in Hood River County, were laid out at a meeting Friday evening in the Scout cabin at Odell. A committee composed of Lloyd Henry, chairman, Oscar Mogren and Harry Plog were elected by the 30-odd present to investigate the possibilities of a district, recommend boundaries and contact residents in and near Odell on their reaction to such a district.

1966 — 60 years ago
Building permits for 1966 in the City of Hood River shot past the $1.5 million mark during August, the highest total ever recorded here, with four months remaining in the year. Permits for August alone totaled $1,036,948. Most of the total involved the $997,186 permit for the Hood River Village complex.

An elaborate fountain that once was moved into storage from a downtown street intersection because it was a traffic hazard was brightly lighted and the water was flowing once more following ceremonies of dedication at its new location in Sorosis Park.
A pair of two-vehicle accidents marred records of state police for Interstate 80N freeway on both sides of The Dalles but all 11 persons involved escaped injury.

Fred Moe’s Golden Delicious apples won the prestigious best box of fruit award at the Oregon State fair this year, and Hood River growers dominated tree fruit awards in both apples and pears. Virtually all the top awards for boxes of apples and pears went to Hood River fruit growers, as several submitted state fair open class entries.

The Washington Department of Game and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission have reported that summer steelhead runs on the upper Columbia River are once again breaking records. This year 276,000 A-run steelhead passed Bonneville Dam between April 1 and August 25.
