HOOD RIVER — Human Resources Director Gus Hedberg and Hood River Valley High School Athletics Director Sean Mailey gave an overview of the successes of winter sports athletes at the April 10 Hood River County School District board meeting.
Athletes and coaches had several league and state placements.
Wrestler Natalia Solorio Campos took second at regionals and was the state qualifier; Connor Farlow earned sixth place at state and second in league, Mailey said.
Swimmers earned a number of recognitions: Girls earned sixth and boys ninth in state; girls 400 freestyle relay took third in state; Caiden Titus earned third in state in 100-yard freestyle and sixth in 200-yard freestyle; and girls earned second and boys third in the Northwest Oregon Conference. Boys and girls teams earned fifth in state in the 200-yard freestyle relay as well: Michelle Graves, Nyxey Heredia, Sophia Helleberg and Sophia Cross on the girls team, and Jackson Bullock, Rohan Faber, Max Weber and Caiden Titus on the boys. Further, Coach Shelly Rawding was the Northwest Oregon Conference Coach of the Year.
The boys Nordic skiing team took second in state, with Fergus Waag earning second, Jayvin Lemieux fifth and Ashton Gilbert eighth in state.
In alpine skiing, the boys team was the Mt. Hood League Champions and the girls team finished second in state; combined, the two teams finished second in state. Emily Teets was Overall State Champion and Mt. Hood League Individual Champion. Lars Welch was Mt. Hood League Individual Champion and finished fourth in state; Thorsen Welch was fifth in state.
And in snowboarding, the boys won the State Championship — winning every event at the Oregon Interscholastic Snowboard Association State Championships. Nainoa Holland was overall state champion, winning Banked Slalom, Boardercross, Slopestyle and Halfpipe. Aidan Edholm earned second overall in state; Finnegan McQuade and Jaxon Green were top five in Banked Slalom and Boardercross; Poppy Clegg earned third in Banked Slalom, Boardercross and Slopestyle. It’s the fifth state championship for the snowboard team in the past six years, Mailey said.
While the girls and boys basketball teams did not make state, there were honors here as well. Marina Castaneda earned first team all-league and an honorable mention all-state and was the third player in HRV girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Sawyer Clemett earned first team all-league.
