HOOD RIVER — The Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Replacement project achieved another milestone last week when they were awarded $50 million from the Washington State Legislature. Their request was awarded in full and will be dispersed over the next two bienniums — $10 million in 2025-27 and $40 million in 2027-29.
This award fulfills Washington’s commitment to contribute $125 million to the bridge replacement efforts. In 2023, the project received $75 million through the Move Ahead Washington public transportation program.
White Salmon Mayor and Hood River White Salmon Bridge Authority Commissioner Marla Keethler provided a statement to Columbia Gorge News: “We are so grateful to our champions in the Washington Legislature who worked to get this funding, especially Sen. Curtis King who has made this a priority for years, as well as our legislators in the 17th District. Not only does it demonstrate Washington’s solid commitment to the project and to the Columbia River Gorge region, this funding also strengthens our ask to the Oregon Legislature to match that commitment. Combined, the two states send a clear message to the federal government and our partners at the U.S. Department of Transportation that our region is serious about and committed to getting this done right, and done now.”
Bridge replacement officials acknowledge there is more work to be done, but the funds take them one step closer to a new bridge.
