THE DALLES — On March 9, Wasco County and The Dalles Little League (TDLL) came together to clean up Kramer Field in anticipation of this year’s field season.
As previously reported by Columbia Gorge News, cleanup goals included edging, weed removal, mound work, cleaning concessions, cleaning and organizing gear sheds, painting the dugouts and concessions and filling and leveling fields.
Volunteers could also participate in a gear swap and a raffle at the end of the day.
“It was amazing to see the collaborative effort from Wasco County Facilities, Administrative Services staff, commissioners and The Dalles Little League volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and dove into the cleanup at Kramer Field,” said Ali Postlewait, director of administrative services for Wasco County. “But the work doesn’t stop here. Our facilities staff is continuing improvement efforts at Kramer Field and Commissioner [Scott] Hege is mowing the fields on a weekly basis. I am incredibly proud of the work we have been able to accomplish together.”
“Little League has been an outstanding community service organization in The Dalles for decades,” the TDLL board said in a statement to Columbia Gorge News. “While our objective is baseball, our purpose is so much deeper. Our organization guides youth to take pride in their communities, develop leadership skills, understand teamwork, respect and develop personal grit. Building community partnerships is at the heart of what we stand for, The Dalles Little League could not exist without the help of our sponsors, many of whom played in the league at some point in their lives. Wasco County has stepped up to the plate for us, big time, the fields are looking better than they have in many years, it’s truly been a home run.”

“They were very helpful,” Jeff Issak, TDLL field and facilities coordinator, said of the Wasco County staff. “They were there all day on a Saturday helping out, donating hand tools, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, that kind of stuff, but they also donated the use of their equipment … I think boots on the ground is the most important part to getting something done … you can do all the planning and stuff you want behind the scenes, but unless you get some people out there, to accomplish the goal it’s not going to happen. I think that was very important on this project.”
Cleanup volunteers from Wasco County included facilities team Doug Hoffman, William Rios, Wayne Connors, Scott Kelsey and Robert Hughes, who handled field maintenance, irrigation, sod cutting, painting and safety/hazard cleanup, as well as Director of Administrative Services Ali Postlewait and Wasco County Commissioners Hege, Steve Kramer and Phil Brady. Volunteers from The Dalles Little League included Issak, Andrew Tenneson and TDLL board member Patrick Urain, Randy Hilderbrand, Sylvia Reiten, Erik Gardipee and Ryan Johnson.
“We hope to see everyone at our Opening Ceremonies, April 6, starting at 9 a.m. on Kramer Field,” the TDLL board statement said.
