Approximately 30 people gathered at the Burlington Northern tracks in Bingen Friday morning to protest the passage of a train which may have been carrying nuclear warheads. Organized by the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace, the protest was part of a series of demonstrations across the country. About 100 people were arrested at a different protest in Vancouver and charged with blocking the train’s progress. Police from county, state and city departments enforced right-of-way restrictions at the track here. Heidi Crangle, Hood River, told police shortly before train arrived — at about 7:35 a.m. — that the demonstrators would not attempt to block the tracks, and there were no arrests here. Two demonstrators had attempted to sit on the tracks earlier, before dawn. They were carried off the tracks by police but not cited.
