Hood River’s Geller graduates from U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Maverick Geller, Hood River, a graduate of Hood River Valley High School, nominated by Congressmen Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and former Congressman Greg Walden, graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point in its Class of 2024 commencement ceremony.Â
The keynote speaker, Jake Sullivan, White House National Security Adviser, gave the commencement speech. Geller received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Maritime Logistics and Security, an unlimited tonnage Merchant Marine Officer license from the Coast Guard, and an officer’s commission in the Navy. Geller is now serving as a third mate in the Merchant Marine while concurrently serving as a Strategic Sealift Officer in the Navy Reserve.Â
While at USMMA Geller was a Battalion Training Officer, four-year starter on the lacrosse team and a member of the golf club. During mission critical Sea Year training Geller sailed as a deck cadet aboard U.S. flagged ships around the globe.
EWU spring dean’s list
CHENEY, WASH. — Eastern Washington University has announced its spring 2024 dean’s list. An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours (QHRS) and receives a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the Dean’s List.
Local students are: Zoe Dunn, The Dalles; and Conner Hanson, Eli Nielsen, Vanessa Sanchez and Eric Wamsley, all of White Salmon.

Anjolina Horzynek receives Fulbright
FOREST GROVE — Ajnolina Horzynek, a graduate of Dufur High School who was raised in both Dufur and Hood River, has received a prestigious Fulbright award and will spend the 2024-25 academic year studying and teaching in Vienna, Austria. A full story will appear in an upcoming edition.
SCC releases honor roll
SPOKANE — Spokane Community College lists 1,941 students on its honor roll for the 2024 Spring quarter, which ended in June. The honor roll lists those students who achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
SCC is one of two community colleges within the Community Colleges of Spokane district. It also offers associates degrees including those that are transfer-ready for those going into universities. SCC serves more than 15,000 students annually with a main campus in east Spokane, five other locations in rural areas of northeastern Washington and a program in the Airway Heights Correctional Center.
