Spring seems like the perfect time for United Way of the Columbia Gorge to kick off its 2014 allocations process. For many, the new life that these much-needed funds bring to local agencies mirrors the essence of the season.
“We are excited to be able to increase our allocations by $30,000 over last year,” said Dave Scarborough, president of UWCG. “Unfortunately, there’s still a discrepancy between what is needed and what we can provide, but every year we get closer to closing the gap.”
One reason for this progress is UWCG’s efforts to encourage more Gorge-based companies to offer their employees convenient ways to contribute at work.
Local employer Insitu made it as simple as clicking a box on an electronic form to sign up for an automatic payroll deduction and tracked its fundraising progress on its internal website. As a result, employee contributions grew by more than 20 percent over last year.
Currently, more than 62 companies and government entities in the Gorge work in some capacity with UWCG.
Scarborough hopes that knowing their contributions stay local will appeal to more area companies and their employees. Although the United Way is a global enterprise, the funds UWCG raises are allocated entirely to nonprofit human services programs in Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Klickitat and Skamania counties.
“UWCG provides a unique service by evaluating the greatest needs across the entire Gorge community to ensure that donated funds make a real difference.” said Scarborough.
