A pickup truck struck and killed two horses on Highway 35 near Parkdale on Wednesday morning.
The driver, Jason Worsham, 36, of Mount Hood-Parkdale, and his two daughters in the vehicle were unharmed. Authorities ruled the crash an accident and did not file criminal charges.
Police were called to the intersection of Highway 35 and Miller Road, in the north outskirts of Parkdale, at about 7:22 a.m. Wednesday on report of a truck colliding with horses in the roadway.
Oregon State Police Trooper Alex Zuniga, who was already on the highway, arrived on scene several minutes later to join police. The pickup, which had been heading northbound when it hit the animals, had significant damage to its front end, Zuniga explained, but all occupants of the vehicle were uninjured.
“Basically a couple horses came out of nowhere … they (were) hit and they died,” Zuniga said.
The horses were owned by nearby land owners Barbara Davis and L. Gylan Lane. Both were adult animals rescued from shelters.
“They were pretty distraught,” Zuniga said of the owners’ reaction, especially out of concern that the truck’s occupants could have been hurt.
The owners weren’t sure how the animals escaped their property, located a few miles away from the highway. Zuniga explained that Davis and Lane inspected their fence lines that day and didn’t find any issues.
ODOT crews removed the two horses from the roadway. The case was closed by late morning.
