THE DALLES — Celebrated watercolor artist Elizabeth Zimmerman will bring her expertise to Colonel Wright Elementary School this Fall, kicking off The Dalles Arts Center’s (TDAC) new Artist-in-Residence program. Funded by the Oregon Arts Commission’s Arts Learning Grant, this innovative project brings professional artists directly into the classroom, providing students with hands-on opportunities to dive into creative expression and develop their artistic skills.
Known for her vibrant and expressive work, Zimmerman emphasizes storytelling, observation and the transformative power of color. She has previously worked with TDAC as a summer art camp instructor.
During her residency, Zimmerman will lead students through a series of watercolor workshops, introducing techniques in color theory, brushwork and composition. “Students will learn to express their personal stories and ideas through art, fostering both confidence and creativity in a supportive environment,” said a press release.
In addition to her work with students, Zimmerman will collaborate with teachers to implement watercolors into the everyday curriculum, ensuring this creative practice continues beyond her residency.
The program will culminate in a Student Art Show, exhibiting students’ original pieces during the residency. The Student Art Show is additionally open to any child wishing to participate, providing a broader platform for young artists across the community.
“Art has the power to inspire and empower young people,” said Ellen Wood Potter, Executive Director of TDAC. “We’re thrilled to bring Elizabeth’s expertise and passion for watercolor directly to Colonel Wright students, and to equip teachers with the tools to continue this work in their classrooms.”
The residency will run from Oct. 27 through Nov. 7. The Student Art Show will commence on Nov. 12. For more information, visit thedallesartcenter.org. Details about Zimmerman’s artwork are available at westernrosestudios.com.
