Notable incidents
A baseball cap was found in White Salmon and returned to its owner.
An ongoing investigation into property damage in Bingen was logged.
Two non-injury vehicle crash reports, from White Salmon and Bingen. In the Bingen incident, on March 17, a driver was cited for hit and run.
An impounded dog was returned to its White Salmon owner.
Hood River Police, March 10 - 16
The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: Assault (one), DUII (four), driving while suspended (two), harassment (two), theft (one), warrant (four).
Notable incidents
Four DUII arrests. In one incident, a non-resident person was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance. They admitted to consuming marijuana, methamphetamine, and Xanax.
Four warrant arrests. In one incident, a Maupin resident was lodged at NORCOR on charges of driving while criminally suspended. In addition, they were lodged on six arrest warrants issued out of five separate jurisdictions, including two out of Hood River County.
Three theft reports. Shoplifting (two incidents) and theft of a shopping cart.
Officers arrested and lodged a Hood River resident on charges of domestic assault and harassment.
Officers responded to a business regarding an alleged assault and arrested a non-resident person on the charge of harassment.
Officers placed an adult person on a peace officer mental hold. They were taken to an area hospital, and custody was released to staff.
Officers responded to an unattended death.
The Dalles Police, March 15 - 21
The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: Burglary (one), DUII (one), harassment (one), probation violation (one), theft (one), trespass (two), warrant (five).
Notable incidents
Sixteen animal calls. Dogs at large, barking dogs, dog welfare checks, missing dog, “very sweet” dog following reporting party.
Twelve theft reports. Battery from Seventh Street, cigarette lighters from store.
Five mental health calls.
Two theft reports. Money in the amount of $300, incident a storage facility.
One fraud report. A reporting party’s purse contents were stolen and used to commit fraud, charges totaling $1,800.
A Forest Service officer found a stolen vehicle in a concrete outhouse at Frog Lake. The last registered owner came and picked it up.
A reporting party found a stop sign laying on the ground near Ninth/Vey Way. Public Works was advised.
Officers responded to a minor two-vehicle crash at 10th and Snipes, March 16.
A baggie of white crystal substance was found on a Columbia View Drive property and picked up by officers for destruction.
A reporting party found remains near a an apparent transient’s shelter, near a sandbar First and Union, and called them in on suspicion of being human. An officer collected them and took a report, at which time it was unknown if they were human.
A report was taken for graffiti on Union Street bathroom stalls.
Wasco County Sheriff, March 15 - 21

Notable incidents
Five animal calls. Dogs at large, unfounded report of rabies, black cow in Highway 97 southbound; the party who reported this last stopped an scared it back behind the fence line.
A couple of large brown couches were found dumped by the roadway near Sevenmile.
One theft report. Prescription glasses.
One motor vehicle crash report. A silver Nissan, having crashed off Threemile Road and into the reporting party’s fence, was found abandoned.
Deputies responded to a call about a group of kids riding four-wheelers in the road on NE Aiken Street, and found a birthday party in progress. The parents were advised ATVs aren’t allowed on paved highways, and deputies then gave a “lightshow” with lights and sirens for the child’s birthday.
A hit-and-run report was taken for damage to a vehicle totaling about $4,000. Exactly where the incident occurred was not known.
Oregon State Police, March 18 - 22
The following are crimes which resulted in arrests: DUII (three), fail to appear (one), reckless driving (two), unauthorized use of motor vehicle (one).
Notable incidents
Three DUII arrests. In one incident, a driver was arrested and lodged for DUII and reckless driving after crashing into the I-84 median, near milepost 73 westbound, for unknown reasons. Driver and passenger were both visibly intoxicated, both suffered from minor injuries, and declined medical attention. The driver was taken into custody and transported to NORCOR, where they gave a breath sample revealing a blood alcohol level of over four times the legal limit. The vehicle was towed.
Five non-injury crashes. In one incident, OSP responded to a single-vehicle crash at milepost 14, US 197 in Wasco County. Investigation determined the driver and only occupant fell asleep, drifted off the road, struck a reflector and then a rocky slope. The driver was given a citation and a ride, and the vehicle towed. In another incident, OSP responded to a motorcycle vs. car crash at the intersection of US 197 and Highway 30. The northbound car made an improper left turn from Highway 30 and was struck. Both drivers suffered minor injuries. In a fourth incident, a Ford F-150 pickup pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with bags of topsoil was westbound on I-84, near milepost 81.5 westbound, when the trailer started to fishtail, causing the driver to lose control. It crashed into the concrete dividers and came to rest blocking the slow lane. The vehicle was towed; ODOT assisted with traffic control, cleanup and pushing the concrete dividers back into place. Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue responded to examine the driver, who proved uninjured. In another incident, a maroon Chevy pickup took exit 56 on I-84 westbound, then as the driver was distracted by their food, collided with a commercial vehicle and two trailers. The commercial driver was asleep in the sleeping portion of their vehicle on the shoulder. The Chevy was towed, the driver issued a citation and transported to a hotel.
In three other incidents, OSP responded to crashes near mileposts 70 and 71 eastbound on I-48, when vehicles struck debris in the roadway, including a large piece of steel. In one incident, a black Subaru was eastbound in the right lane when it struck a large piece of debris that fell off another vehicle; it sustained significant damage. In another incident, two commercial vehicles and a travel van struck debris scattered across the freeway, sustaining damage. Two drove away, but another awaited a mechanic.
One DUII arrest. A trooper responded to a call of a wrong-way driver on I-84. The driver was located off the roadway, crashed into a forest road gate. The driver displayed signs of controlled substance impairment, had a warrant out of Douglas County, and had no operator’s license. They were arrested for multiple charges and lodged at NORCOR.
One injury crash. A gray Nissan Sentra was westbound on US 30 just west of The Dalles, when it rolled off an embankment. The driver reported remembering swerving to the left, then possibly blacking out. There was no evidence the driver was impaired. They were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The vehicle was towed. ODOT and Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.
A trooper reported a deceased spike bull elk on Long Rock Road, about four miles out of Lone Rock, at 5:40 p.m. on March 20. Investigation determined that the elk was struck by a vehicle, breaking its upper right rear leg. Backstraps had been taken from the elk. ODFW informed that no one had turned in a road-kill report to them, and per the rules the entire animal must be properly reported and taken. The animal was first reported by a landowner. Follow-up is ongoing.
