Arrests made — March 16-22, Hood River Police charged people with concealed firearm (one), DUII (one), elude (one), fail to carry/present license (one), false information (one), harassment (one), identity theft (one), obstruction (one), reckless driving (one), theft (one), trespass (two), warrant (three). March 20-28, The Dalles police charged people with disorderly conduct (two), DUII (one), harassment (two), mischief (two), possession of drugs (three), restraining order violation (one), trespass (three), warrant (seven), and exact charge not logged (five). That same week, Oregon State police charged people with assault (one), criminal possession of forged instrument (one), disorderly conduct (one), DUII (two), reckless driving (three). Wasco County Sheriff’s Office does not release arrests, but logged two warrant incidents.
Seven charges — On March 16, Hood River police arrested an Everett, Washington, resident on charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, failure to carry and present an operator’s license, reckless driving, eluding, giving false information, identity theft and a nationwide arrest warrant out of Bell County, Texas.
ID theft — Identity theft, used to gain community college admittance, was reported to Hood River police on March 17. An investigation began. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office also logged a fraud call.
Got a tip? — Hood River police took three theft reports last week: Stolen tip jar from Papa Murphy’s and shoplifting. On March 19, an officer helped Hood River Sheriff’s Office deputies serve a search warrant on a vehicle.
Hidden gun — A Washington resident was arrested March 19 by The Dalles police for carrying a concealed firearm.
Choking — A The Dalles officer assisted Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue with a restaurant patron on Second Street who was choking. CPR was performed for some time before “medics were eventually able to get a heart beat,” according to media logs. The patron was transported to an area hospital and their partner was given a ride there by other restaurant patrons.
Mental health — Four mental health calls received by The Dalles dispatch last week. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office got two.
Jewels, tools and paddles — The Dalles police took 10 theft reports last week: Tools from garage break-in, unspecified, tools and backpack, jacket, vehicle, $200 from purse, $2,000 in jewelry from shed, wallet, beer drunk in store. In one incident, a canoe, six paddles and six life jackets were reported stolen from E. 20th Street on March 25. Separately, a stolen vehicle was recovered on Esther Way/Scenic Drive March 23. And a burglary was reported on March 22, when a residence’s window was broken and items lost. Wasco County Sheriff’s Office recorded two theft incidents.
Dog days — The Dalles police logged 21 animal calls last week. One cat, hit by car, and some dogs: barking, aggressive, skinny, missing, wandering, chained to a tree, getting impounded, two dog bites ...
Wasco County Sheriff’s Office also got four dog calls.
Box of bits — A local turned over a box full of Honda parts to a The Dalles officer after a Sixth-Street dealership reported it stolen. The person stated they had found it.
Scams — A The Dalles officer was flagged down by someone who wanted to report an international horse racing scam. A phone scam was reported March 25.
Gun — A person alleged that an acquaintance threatened them with a gun during an altercation in The Dalles last week.
Camp fire — The Dalles police helped Wasco County Sheriff’s Office and Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue with a brush fire burning near West Second, which neared the train tracks and burned an “abandoned” houseless person’s camp next to them. Train traffic was stopped while the fire was contained.
Two injury crashes — On March 21, a Nissan Altima hydroplaned near milepost 131 eastbound, spun and struck the center divider on I-84. The driver was warned by Oregon State Police for driving too fast for conditions and transported to a hospital. On March 27, maintenance on I-84 had completely stopped traffic at milepost 59 eastbound. One commercial truck, not observing this, crashed into the back of another, pushing the second truck into a Nissan Frontier; the driver got several citations. Two drivers were transported to a local hospital for suspected minor injuries.
The Dalles police also reported a crash on Sixth Street March 23.
Race — A trooper cited two drivers for speeding 95 and 88 mph respectively, after catching them racing each other on Highway 197.
Three non-injury crashes — On March 24, OSP responded to a truck that blew a tire, lost control on I-84 and hit a guardrail near eastbound milepost 68. March 26, a pickup rear-ended another which was turning into a driveway. Also March 26, a vehicle left its lane and hit another’s mirror.
Turkey sign — At about 3:10 p.m. March 23, a trooper was informed a turkey had been illegally harvested on Forest Road 21. At 4:45, the trooper arrived to find blood, tracks and feathers at the scene, but recovered no evidence or suspect information there.
Lose anything? — A trooper cited a 52-year-old person for speeding 102 mph on I-84. The next day, he responded to a welfare check for the same person and their six dogs on the shoulder of I-84. The person was going through cancer, had run out of fuel, and their car and phone batteries both died. The trooper started charging the phone, handed out gas, and got the person to Biggs, then forgot to return the phone — which, since the person can’t be located and had not reached out, he placed into safekeeping at The Dalles.
Assault while driving — A male passenger was arrested and lodged at NORCOR for assault and reckless driving after allegedly assaulting the driver of a Chevrolet and grabbing the steering wheel, causing a crash on I-84 near milepost 67 eastbound. The driver was transported to a hospital for injuries.
Road walk — This week, OSP got seven calls regarding a person laying in a ditch beside I-84 near The Dalles. On March 27, the same person walked the I-84 fog line between Rufus and Arlington in dark clothing. OSP was called after the person nearly got hit. A trooper found them lying on the paved shoulder, lodged them on charge of disorderly conduct, and contacted a mental health service for them.
Minor crime — Upon stopping a Honda Civic in The Dalles March 27, an OSP trooper found a 19-year-old passenger trying to conceal a bag of marijuana. They were cited for being a minor in possession of the marijuana, which was seized.
A search and rescue — was called on Forest Service Road 44/Road 4430 at about 9 p.m. March 25.
