MISSOULA, Mont. – The Missoula Fire Department is celebrating Women's History Month by acknowledging two pioneering women who were among the first female firefighters in the department. Marie Bussard and Carla Gamradt helped pave the way for future generations.

Carla Gamradt retired after more than 31 years in the fire service, spanning both wildland and structural firefighting. Initially pursuing a degree in physical education, Gamradt sought a more hands-on and challenging career, leading her to firefighting. She began with the Missoula Fire Department and later moved to Minnesota, retiring as a Fire Equipment Operator with Duluth Fire.
