Gen Z is turning the American road trip into a group activity, and the RV is at the center of it. Young travelers are booking rentals and campsites less for the scenery than for the company: neighbors two sites over who become travel companions by the second night. For a generation raised on screens, the fastest way to find a crew this year is a full tank of gas.
Campgrounds have always put people close together, but Gen Z is leaning into that in a way the data clearly shows. For a generation that grew up online, proximity that isn’t scheduled or arranged carries real weight. Camping offers that by default, with no planning app required.
Camping data shows what Gen Z actually wants
Gen Z campers are the generation most likely to build lasting campsite friendships, with 43% saying they stay in touch with those connections long after a trip ends. Boomers report the most frequent campsite conversations, but Gen Z is building the relationships that actually stick. The pull runs deeper than one generation, too. Three in 4 campers now describe campgrounds as a genuine “third place,” somewhere outside home and work where real community happens.

Route 66 turns 100 this year, with the highway officially commissioned into the United States system on Nov. 11, 1926. Communities along all eight states the route passes through, Illinois to California, are already gearing up, with the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission coordinating festivals and organized caravans timed to the milestone.
The centennial lands in the same year as America’s 250th birthday. Independence Day has passed, but official America250 programming continues through the rest of the year at national parks and historic sites nationwide. Between the two, 2026 is stacking up as a rare year with two reasons to plan an extended trip instead of one.
A free week to visit the parks
The National Park Service is adding its own incentive, waiving entrance fees nationwide on Aug. 25 as part of National Park Week, which runs Aug. 22 through 30 and marks the agency’s 110th birthday. It’s a fee-free window landing in the middle of late-summer travel season, at parks that are already common stops on RV routes.
RV parks saw a surge this summer
RV parks near World Cup host cities saw a real surge this summer. During the tournament’s June 10-20 window, RV parks supplied more than tripled within 50 miles of host cities from the year before, even as hotel bookings in several of those same cities tracked below early forecasts. Campground and RV park operators leaned into the gap, ramping up listings and visibility on booking platforms to capture travelers hotels weren’t reaching.
Cost is still a real hurdle
Cost remains a real obstacle for younger travelers, as they face real retention challenges tied to price sensitivity, even though they spend the highest daily rates of any generation when they do camp. Renting an RV lowers the barrier compared with buying one outright, but between fuel, campsite fees and rental costs, a multi-day trip adds up fast. That tension between wanting the experience and affording it isn’t going away on its own.
That tension isn’t likely to disappear, but it doesn’t seem to be slowing anyone down either. Between the friendships forming at campsites and a year stacked with reasons to hit the road, the American road trip is looking less like a solo escape and more like a shared one, one campsite and one new connection at a time.
