The dorm room used to start with a mini fridge and a poster tacked above the bed. Now it starts weeks earlier, in a group chat where roommates trade Pinterest boards and argue over color schemes before either of them owns a lease. It has become a small design project, planned like a home renovation and executed in a single August weekend.
By the time most students arrive on campus, they’ve already watched dozens of other people’s rooms come together first. TikTok dorm tours are their own genre by August, room reveals set to music, complete with before-and-after shots and product tags. Incoming freshmen scroll through them from their childhood bedrooms, taking notes on layouts, color palettes and shelving tricks before they’ve measured their own space. A finished room posted online sets a bar the next student feels obligated to clear, even if they’ve never met their roommate.
Families are on track to spend a record $103.5 billion getting students ready for the school year, the first time the category has surpassed $100 billion and up from $88.8 billion last year. But not every line item is climbing at the same rate, and the dorm room itself tells a more complicated story.
The real dorm number
Strip away the anecdotes, and the average is far more modest. Families planning to buy dorm or apartment furnishings this year expect to spend $194 on average, barely above $191.39 last year, the slowest growth of any of the top five college spending categories.
The total dollars flowing into the category still grew, from $12.8 billion to $14 billion, but that increase aligns more with households buying in than any single household spending dramatically more. The typical dorm shopper isn’t chasing a designer look; they’re buying bedding, storage bins and a lamp, the same as they always have.
What’s actually trending
If dorm budgets aren’t ballooning, the mood board still is. Searches for “dorm designer” jumped 525% over the past month, and “3D rendering dorm room” became one of the platform’s breakout searches nationally in the same stretch. The most popular aesthetic isn’t luxury at all.
Coastal, boho and beach are among the season’s top trending dorm styles, with pink, blue and green as the leading colors, a distinctly beachy palette for a room nowhere near open water. Wallpaper searches spiked too, with hydrangea as the top-searched pattern in a decor category built to peel off before a security deposit is at risk.
Retailers lean in
Retailers are treating the moment as a merchandising opportunity rather than a luxury market. Target’s back-to-college lineup this year includes Hollister’s first home-and-dorm collaboration, with bedding and decor priced mostly under $50, alongside a limited-run Poppi dorm collection that extends the soda brand into robes, throw pillows and mini fridges starting at $20. A separate partnership with LoveShackFancy brings the brand’s prints to school supplies and accessories for under $55. The pricing across all three leans toward everyday shopping, not specialty design work.
The commercial interest extends past the shelves. Among MNTN’s own advertisers in dorm-adjacent categories such as bedding and home goods, a sample of fewer than 100 accounts, average revenue grew 73.6% year over year during last summer’s peak buying window, and visits per advertiser more than doubled.
Electronics still dominates the category overall, the single largest piece of college spending at $341.95 average and $24.63 billion total. Personal care actually grew fastest of the five categories, up 13% to $133.34 average. The dorm room is generating real commercial interest. It just isn’t where the record spending is landing.
The gap between the dorm room that gets photographed and the one that gets lived in isn’t closing. It’s just getting cheaper to fake.
