(The Center Square) – Two students were hospitalized following a school shooting Wednesday at Evergreen High School, nestled in the foothills about 30 miles west of Denver.
The male shooter was also hospitalized. According to authorities Wednesday evening, he died of self-inflicted injuries.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, held a press conference Wednesday.
Jacki Kelley, the office’s public information officer, said the first call regarding the shooting was received at 12:24 p.m.
“Very quickly thereafter, we received a lot of phone calls coming in from the school,” Kelley said. “Everybody on duty came rushing up here, as well as literally hundreds of law enforcement.”
Kelley added that it seems from initial investigations that the incident happened on school property, but “potentially outside of the school.”
ATF Denver and FBI Denver had personnel respond to the scene and are assisting in the investigation. Authorities say they believe there is no ongoing threat to the community.
In 2024, Evergreen High School had about 900 students in grades 9-12.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office plans to hold another news conference Thursday to share more details about the incident.
