The City of White Salmon’s top government official, Mayor Marla Keethler, launched her campaign for State Senate in Washington’s 17th Legislative District. Her announcement came via LinkedIn and she shared a website link that gives voters a look into her vision and priorities. The 17th District is currently represented in the senate by Lynda Wilson, who was elected in 2016. Every 10 years the State of Washington realigns districts and new lines are expected to take affect this year.
The new 17th District will include east Vancouver to Klickitat County and Goldendale. It will span north past Mount Saint Helens north into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
In her online post, Keethler said, “So much of this decision was rooted in how my community has energized me in the role of mayor, and feeling like we need more people in leadership positions that understand real change doesn’t happen by any single person or policy. It happens when there’s the follow through, the coalition building, the understanding of what barriers on the ground have kept many ideas from moving ahead. I’m excited to continue doing this work from the State Capitol.”
Keethler has sat in the mayor’s chair since 2020 and has led the city through the COVID-19 pandemic and Tunnel 5 fire, reworked the city’s housing and zoning codes, implemented a new transportation program and played an integral role in procuring a new bridge.
The website outlines her intentions if she were to be voted into office. Affordable housing tops her list, followed by childcare, public safety and infrastructure. To learn more about Keethler and her campaign, visit MarlaForSenate.com.
The primary election will be held on August 6 and the general election is scheduled for November 5. As of May 6, Keethler and Vancouver resident, Paul Harris, are the only applicants. The deadline to file is May 10.
