Jail works with immigration agency

NORCOR, Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facility, shares operations with four Gorge counties, including Hood River. At a recent meeting, law enforcement officials explained immigration policy and the jail’s relationship with the federal agency Immigration and Customs Enforcement. State law prohibits local police from enforcing federal immigration law, but federal law requires that the local jail provide information to ICE officials.

Wasco County Sheriff Lane Magill explained at a meeting last Saturday that a 1987 state law prohibits city, county and state police from acting in any capacity to help with immigration efforts.

However, if a person is arrested, state law allows — and federal law requires — the local jail to provide that information to immigration officials.
