The previous history mystery, right, showed the building of Celilo Canal locks and that was all we knew. Then Bruce Johnson, Alan Hickenbottom, and Marilyn Urness all chimed in to identify the site, still-existing railroad bridge, and the locks, built in 1915 at an estimated cost of $5 million to allow boat navigation upstream past Celilo Falls as far as Lewiston, Idaho.

 That makes this photo more than a hundred years old, although the date it was taken is unknown. A print was donated to Columbia Gorge Discovery Center from Gladys Seufert’s estate, and scanned; it’s now item 1997.13.359 in the collections.
