THE GORGE — Watching the news regarding hurricane and wildfire disasters? Want to get your ham radio license so you can communicate when all else fails?
Well, here’s the opportunity!
The Radio Amateurs of the Gorge (RAGS) is hosting a review session for the introductory Technician Amateur Radio License Nov. 15-16, followed by an exam session for all license levels on the 16th.
The review session is free. Attendees are expected to self-study before the session. Free study materials and practice examinations are provided upon registration.
The examination fee is $15, but free to those under 18 years of age.
After successfully completing the examination, the FCC requires an additional $35 fee for the new license (paid directly to the FCC). The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for amateur radio, will reimburse the $35 fee for those under 18 years of age.
The review class will be held at the Hood River Fire Department Training Room, 1785 Meyer Parkway, Hood River, on Friday, Nov. 15 from 5:30-9 p.m., and again on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees should bring their own lunch on Saturday.
The exam for all license classes (Technician, General, and Extra) will begin at 4:30 p.m., also at the Hood River Fire Department. The examinations are now conducted electronically and participants will be required to bring their own device (smart phone, iPad, tablet, and laptop) to take the exam.
