Both have provided grant support for the district in their role as collective impact health specialists (CIHS) and community grant writers for Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, Hedberg said.
Providence uses Community Benefit dollars to fund the CIHS positions; Lindberg and Rawson-Wagner work with organizations to identify and design programs that address community needs — and then find the funding for them. In the past 10 years, more than 100 programs have been implemented, with just over $30 million raised, Lindberg said.
“As a school district, we rely on grants — they’re one of those parts of our funding that allow us to do creative and innovative things,” Hedberg said.
This school year, HRCSD was awarded three STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) grants — $20,000 from Roundhouse, $23,000 from the Ford Family Foundation and $50,000 from Mills Davis. Lindberg has also helped secure funding for the district’s ExCEL programs — $2.5 million to support after school care and instruction over five years — among many others.
“I’ve got a soft spot for education,” Lindberg told the board. “… We get to write the grants, but you guys are the ones — and your teachers and your staff — you guys are the ones doing the work. We’re just telling the story.”
He added HRCSD is a leader across the state for addressing equity “in very intentional ways, and that makes a massive difference in getting all of these grants.”
Superintendent Bill Newton thanked Lindberg and Rawson-Wagner for their work with the district, as well as Providence for funding the grant writing position.
The meeting was held at Hood River Valley High School. The next meeting will be June 5 at Cascade Locks Elementary, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
