THE GORGE — The Columbia River Gorge Quilters’ Guild will be hosting its annual quilt show featuring a display by Kathie Kerler. The 17th Annual Gorge Quilt Show opens Friday, Oct. 11 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Hood River County Fairgrounds.
Kerler, a graduate of the City and Guilds Institute of London, was a contributing editor to American Quilter Magazine, writing more than 100 articles. Her works have been displayed at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, the International Quilt and Fiber Fest in LaConner, Washington, and graced the cover of the 2018 American’ Quilter’s Society wall calendar. She has shown work in Japan, France, Brazil and Korea.
“We are thrilled to have Kathy display some of her work at our show,” said Kim Vogel, Quilt Show chair. “She has judged our show for several years and we felt it was time to share her skills and knowledge with our viewers.”
New prize categories have been added to highlight the changes in quilting techniques. In addition to Hand Quilting, nonprofessional entrants can compete for prizes in Computer Aided Machine Quilting and Hand Guided Machine Quilting. Professional machine quilters will be competing for Best Machine Quilting. “We are excited about giving a ribbon to the professional quilters who are often unrecognized. I expect this category to be very competitive,” said Vogel.
In addition to the special exhibit of Kerler’s quilts, Guild members will have two special displays: The Big and Bolder Challenge by Beyond the Block members and Log and Lean, an all-member guild challenge to use the traditional Log Cabin block in a 12-by-48-inch hanging. During the show, members will share tips and tricks in ongoing demonstrations of quilt-making skills and techniques. Visitors will also be able to “sit and sew” on take home projects.
The show includes vendor booths featuring fabrics, tools, patterns, and the latest advancements in sewing machines for sewing, quilting, and embroidery. A food court will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring soups and sandwiches from Freshies Bagels and Juice.
The Fairgrounds are located at 3020 Wy’east Road in Hood River. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $46 (see ad in this edition for a $1 off coupon). Free parking. ADA accessible. For more information, visit gorgequiltersguild.com or email goregequiltersguild@gmail.com.
