I’m sorry to share the news of the passing of a dear Glenwood “kid,” Belinda Burrill Schultz, on June 24. Belinda, the daughter of Skip and Shirley Burrill, was much loved here, both in her younger years growing up in Glenwood and after she was retired and moved back to her home town. She was a very skilled seamstress and often made beautiful outfits for rodeo queen courts, among the many beautiful things she created.
Belinda suffered from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and the many complications that arose from the illness. She could no longer sew, but I would often see her in her wheelchair, tending to her flower bed at the little white house where she lived. She was a member of the Glenwood Women’s Club until her medical condition necessitated a move to Vancouver, where she could get the care she needed in an assisted living facility.
Her family asks that, when you see this, to please take a moment to remember how much strength she had. Her granddaughter Jayden Rose said, “Even in a wheelchair, that never stopped her from picking weeds and watering her beautiful garden out front and the sides of the house. My grandmother, as you all might know, took care of me for a large portion of my life. She was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. You couldn’t miss her scooting in her scooter. All the laughs and smiles and faces that lit up in the room when she came in, all the great stories she would tell, and just how much joy she brought to the Glenwood community when her and I moved here. And before I was here, she graduated from Glenwood in the class of 1978.”
Belinda’s children, Emilee and Andy Shultz, are planning a memorial service to be held here in Glenwood. No date has yet been set, but when they do, I’ll share it in Glenwood news. Our deepest condolences go to her mother Shirley, her children, and her grandchildren. She was preceded by her dad, Skip. She lived with intense pain for so many years but always had that beautiful smile on her face and a friendly hello. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The family of Chester Tubbs would like to let everyone who might have known him or worked with him at C & H of his recent passing. No date has yet been set for a service for Chester.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Fourth of July festivities in the various communities. A big thanks goes to the Glenwood Station for organizing a Main Street water fight. Unfortunately, many of the older kids are either working out of town, or busy with haying here, and didn’t get to participate.
But we sure appreciate the staff and the station for supporting our community kids in so many ways.
I haven’t had recent updates on summer rodeo activity for Walla Walla Community College rodeo team member Joslyn Arnold, but I’m sure she’s participating in as many NPRA rodeos as she can. Two other Glenwood cowgirls, Jocee and Jentry Hoctor, have been competing in the Central Washington Ropers and Riders Association events over the summer. Just recently, Jocee won the barrels with a smoking 17.76 time. That’s right up there with the run times of the top pro rodeo contestants in the Women’s Barrels at our Glenwood Rodeo this year. Way to go, Jocee. Both cowgirls are enjoying these events and doing very well.
Here’s a note for those interested in attending the July and August school board meetings. The date for July’s meeting is changed to Wednesday July 22 at 7 p.m. The August meeting has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 26, also at 7 p.m. Please remember, everyone is invited to attend and sit in on these meetings to get a better idea of school business and updates.
