WHITE SALMON — On April 24, members of Columbia High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter embarked on a bus ride to Spokane to attend and compete in the annual 2024 State Business Leadership Conference.
Through the course of FBLA, students compete in a variety of presentation, role play and online events designed to test their business competencies in specific fields. For some students, participation and recognition in FBLA has been a continuous source of pride, accomplishment, and community throughout high school. For others, it signifies new opportunities to foster career-related skills, manifest leadership capabilities and develop formative experiences. The hard work and dedication of Columbia High School’s team was reflected at the regional competition in February, where 40 students individually qualified for state, more than any other school in the region.
Maintaining the competitive energy exhibited at regionals, Columbia students displayed an excellent performance at state, as fourteen competitors placed in the top 10. The team of Lola Marti, Fiona Grabb and Lani Uffelman and the team of Kiki Barkheimer and Maya Tama both placed in Introduction to Event Planning, eighth and sixth respectively. Anders Daly took home ninth in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure, Claire Hayes earned ninth in Computer Applications, and the team of Audrey Coyner and Antonio Vargas received sixth in Graphic Design.
Garrett Kock found success in multiple events, bringing in seventh in Sales Presentation and making it to fourth in Spreadsheet Applications. Madeline Ayer placed fifth in Business Communications, Milo Hoppus earned fourth in Journalism, and Nina Hart-mann and Anna Zendt won seventh and third in Client Service. Hartmann also received third in Human Resource Management.
Those who placed in the top four qualified for the National Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Florida. Regardless of awards recognition, all participants experienced a sense of achievement, pleasure and gratification during their trip, said a press release. Students were encouraged to take advantage of opportunities like leadership workshops, college tours, and the ability to represent their school and community at the state level. Chapter Adviser Colin Cieloha communicated his admiration of the FBLA team, praising the higher member turnout, awards performance, and business etiquette demonstrated at the state competition. Similarly, senior member and Chapter President Luke Harrison expressed gratitude for the business connections and learning opportunities presented on the trip, and applauded the team’s accomplishments during the award ceremonies. Largely, FBLA’s state success is emblematic of the passion, excellence, and competitive spirit fostered at Columbia High School, said Cieloha.
