The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Opal Foundation have announced that in late spring Philippi Park will open for the second year in a row, following a multi-year closure that began in 2013 due to recreation budget cuts.
Philippi Park in Gilliam County will open for the season on May 21 and the park will remain open until October 1. The park is accessible by boat only, about three miles up the John Day River from its confluence with the Columbia River.
Teaming up, the Corps and the Opal Foundation are inviting campers, hikers, boaters, anglers and all outdoor enthusiasts back to the park.
Park improvements and expansions will continue this upcoming season with help and support from volunteers. Those would like to join in the restoration work during the 2017 season can sign up at www.opal-foundation.org.
According to Opal’s website, efforts are underway to restore sand beaches, obtain maintenance equipment, install an onsite dwelling for a camp host, install a swim dock, as well as refurbishing restrooms and sprinkler systems.
Albert Philippi Park, tucked on the John Day River near Arlington, was established in 1972 to provide facilities and recreation opportunities to boaters on the two rivers.
Each year, 13,000 visitors docked at the boat-in park to cast a line, grill lunch, set up camp, take a swim, or just relax with friends and family.
Opal Foundation is an Oregon 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Parking and boat launch facilities are available at nearby LePage Park, also owned by the Corps.
To get to LePage, head eastbound on Interstate 84 from The Dalles. Travel roughly 30 miles, into Sherman County, then take exit 114 to access the park’s facilities.
