Trout Lake School District’s Jayla Avila was recognized as a Most Valuable Teammate by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) and the Oregon Army National Guard.
Here’s an honor for a Glenwood High School senior, Jayla Avila, that needs to take top billing in today’s column. Jayla has been a standout player on the Trout Lake/Glenwood girls basketball team. Those of us who know Jayla and have watched her participate in school activities for years know how well deserved this recognition is. This news comes from the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA):
“Partnering with the Oregon Army National Guard, we are recognizing the Most Valuable Teammates across the state. Each varsity coach was asked to identify the MVT of their team. Of all the selections, one student is recognized as the MVT for their activity. These individuals exemplify what being a teammate is all about: leads by example, willing to play any role, works hard, displays a positive and energetic attitude, and supports others.”

The weekend of April 3-4 was bright and sunny, a great weekend for a rodeo. Glenwood “kid” Joslyn Arnold, a Glenwood High School 2024 graduate, now a freshman at Walla Walla Community College, competed with her WWCC Warriors Rodeo Team in Ontario, Oregon. Joslyn and her good horses Tommy and Taco shined as brightly as the sun as she competed in her events. On April 3, Joslyn placed first in breakaway roping and first in goat tying. In the short round on April 4, she was first and second and first in the average in breakaway. In goat tying, she placed third, fourth and fifth, and fifth in the average.
At the end of competition, Joslyn was awarded a beautiful saddle and buckle for Break-away Roping and All-Around Cowgirl. A great rodeo for Joslyn, and I would say Ontario and the sun-shine suited her, Tommy, and Taco just fine. Way to go, cowgirl.
Another former Glenwood kid, also a freshman on the rodeo team, Blake Masden, placed second in bull riding on Friday evening and first and second in the short round to finish second in the average for the week-end. Both Joslyn and Blake continue to rank high in the Northwest College Rodeo Association standings.
I am also pleased to share some exciting news regarding another Glenwood kid, Allison McFall. Ally is a sophomore at Washington State University, where she continues to soar academically while enjoying a little fun at the same time. She is just wrapping up WSU Drama Department’s production of the stage play “Clue.” Her parents, Sara and Adam, traveled to Pullman last weekend to see the final performance.
That was just the fun news. The exciting news is that Ally has been accepted to study abroad for the fall term, in beautiful Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Ally will travel to Amsterdam in September and return home in December. I’m looking forward to hearing all about her wonderful experience when she’s home in Glenwood for Christmas at the end of this year. Ally, you continue to amaze us with all you do.
