HOOD RIVER — In November, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Board of Directors awarded Congressman Earl Blumenauer the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to public media. Blumenauer is the representative for Hood River and parts of Multnomah County in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He is the chair and founder of the Congressional Public Broadcasting Caucus and built bipartisan support for public broadcasting’s contributions to education, history and culture; local journalism, news and information; public safety and civic leadership.
According to a news release from the CPB, Blumeanuer’s “advocacy was instrumental in garnering support among his colleagues and the public, ensuring that public broadcasting remains an integral and well-supported part of American society.”
During his career, he spoke on the House floor to bring attention to the services that public media provides, and has advocated for increased funding.
In 2010, CPB honored Congressman Blumenauer with the Ralph Lowell Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions and achievements to public media.
“Congressman Blumenauer’s steadfast support is based on his firsthand knowledge of how local, rural, and urban public media, which are community based, contribute to the civic health of our nation,” said Patricia Harrison, CPB president and CEO. “We are grateful for his leadership and support.”
Blumenauer announced in October 2023 that he would not seek re-election and retire at the end of his term on Dec. 31. Filling his seat as the District 3 Representative will be Democrat and Portland resident Maxine Dexter, who participated in an exclusive interview with the Columbia Gorge News. She detailed her goals for her two year term, which will be published in the Jan. 1 edition.
