THE DALLES — The annual Sunrise Service at Pulpit Rock will celebrate its 100th year at 6:30 a.m. on March 31. Pulpit Rock is located at 12th and Court streets. It will also be livestreamed via Zoom. The speaker will be Rev. Richard LaFever.

“The local Masonic Lodge was chartered in 1859 and has organized and led the Easter Sunrise Service since 1924, using the Royal Arch Masons, Knights of Templar, and the Catholics’ Knights of Columbus,” writes Rev. Donnamae Craber Grannemann in an event flyer, noting that Sunrise Service no. 96 was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic; it was resumed in 2021 as the 96th service. “When the tradition first began, The Dalles High School Band Teacher, Pop Endicot, would get several sets of two or three boys each in convertibles. They would be driven around The Dalles an hour before the sunrise service (5:30 a.m.) and played music to wake people up so they could be over here to the rock in time.”
