During his first game, McFerrin revealed that he was on a state championship team for Scholastic Bowl. He was the captain and was on the team with Raut, who was a sophomore when he was a senior. He was also on a rec league softball team with Holzhauer in Illinois when they were 10-years-old.
For his second game on June 2, McFerrin tried to continue his winning streak and play as well as the champions mentioned above. The game show contestant played against Alex Reyes, from Panorama City, California, and Savannah Madeira, from Kempton, Pennsylvania. Warning: Spoilers for the June 2episode of Jeopardy! ahead!
“We learned that Peter had quite the Jeopardy! pedigree in his past. He once captained a high school state-winning scholastic bowl team that also featured none other than the reigning Jeopardy! Masters champion, Yogesh Raut,” host Ken Jennings said at the beginning of the episode. “And he played on a softball team with a youngster then known as Jamie Holzhauer.”
By clue 15, McFerrin was in third place with $2,000, but he had a long way to go to try to catch up. When he found the Daily Double on clue 26, McFerrin was in second place with $4,600. He was only $300 away from taking the lead.
McFerrin wagered $1,000 in “Hold Everything!” The clue read, “Through a lease, Great Britain held on to this special administrative region east of the Pearl River Estuary from 1898 to 1997.”
“What is Hong Kong?” he correctly answered. This gave him the lead with $5,600.
By the end of the round, he was still in the lead with $6,200. Reyes, an authorization tech, had $4,200. Madeira, an arts administrator, was in third place with $3,800.
In Double Jeopardy, Reyes took the lead by clue four with $6,600. However, McFerrin went right back into first place on the next clue.
When he found the first DD on clue 10, he had $9,000. McFerrin wagered $3,000 in “All Science.”
The clue read, “Ekman spirals form in the ocean because of the deflection of currents due to this effect named for a Frenchman.” He correctly answered with “What is the Coriolis effect?,” making his total $12,000.
Then, on clue 15, McFerrin extended his lead with the last DD. At that point, he had $17,600, which was $12,000 ahead of second place. The champion wagered $6,000 in “Geographic Before & After.”
The clue was “Span that links Marin County to San Francisco while also leading to the Doge’s palace.” “What is the Golden Gate Bridge of Sighs?” He had $23,600.
McFerrin ended the round with $32,400. Madeira moved to second place with $7,800. Reyes had $5,400.
“20th Century Novels” was the category for Final Jeopardy. The clue read, “An introductory note to this novel offered gratitude to ‘the great profession of architecture and its heroes.'”
Reyes answered “What is The Fountainhead?” which was correct. He wagered all of his money, making his final total $10,800.
Madeira’s response was “What is The Brutalist?” She wagered $3,001, giving her $4,799. McFerrin also had the correct response. He wagered $16,799, making his total $49,199.
Although it wasn’t near Holzhauer’s single-game total, McFerrin still played a great game. He had a two-day total of $68,198 and will return on Wednesday for game three.
