THE DALLES — The Dalles High finished sixth in the 16-team Rick Sanders Invitational boys wrestling tournament Dec. 14 in Portland.
The Riverhawks scored 77 team points, led by Alfred Brackenbury’s 27. The 175-pounder won all four of his wrestled matches en route to his title and a 9-1 record this season. Brackenbury won by technical fall and fall to earn a spot in the semifinals. There he beat Ryan Cortez Aviles of Heritage High, 15-11. That put him opposite Tigard’s Bryson Harty in the final where the Riverhawk wrestler won, 21-6.
The Dalles had two other placers (top four). Harley Scott at 138 pounds finished second (scoring 22.5 team points), losing in the final to Lincoln’s Nico Farinola, 16-0. Farinola placed third at the 2024 OSAA Class 6A state tourney at 132 pounds. Jesiah Salazar placed fourth and scored 14.5 team points at 150. Salazar lost in the quarterfinals but battled back in consolation with three wins to earn a spot in the third-place match. Xavier Lions of Hudson Bay beat Salazar, 21-6, to earn third place.
The Riverhawks had eight other wrestlers who won at least one match last weekend. Juan Olmos and Taven Velador each went 2-2 at 138; Creighton Clack and Aiden Flores were both 2-2 at 144; Quinn Brenner and Dante Martinez each went 3-2 at 175; and Richard Miller and Brenden Manciu both won one of two wrestled matches.
The Dalles girls compete at Portland tourney
The Dalles High’s girls wrestling team placed 11th at the 17-team Rick Sanders Invitational tourney Dec. 14 at Lincoln High in Portland.
The Riverhawks had seven competitors in the tourney which included Class 4A, 5A and 6A schools from Oregon and larger schools from Washington, as well.
Mary McCracken won three of five matches at 130 pounds to pace The Dalles’ wrestlers. She opened the tourney with a win by fall but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual winner Lozen Warner of Franklin. McCracken bounced back to win two more matches before losing in the consolation semifinals.
Teammate Destiny Totolhua won her first two matches before losing in the 115-pound semifinals and then in the consolation semifinals.
Two other The Dalles wrestlers won matches; Ivy Arguello was 1-2 at 110 pounds, and Ashley Totolhua was 1-2, also at 110. Amery Linker, Jamie Bastian, and Carlieanna Morales also competed in the tourney for the Riverhawks.
