The undefeated No. 6-ranked Sherman High Huskies (3-0 league, 14-0 overall) extended their OSAA Class 1A boys basketball win streak to 14 with a 48-41 Big Sky League home victory over the Condon High Blue Devils (1-1 league, 7-4 overall) on Jan. 6 in Moro.
The Huskies are the only unbeaten squad out of 80 Class 1A teams. The Huskies will try to maintain their perfect record and win their 15th game Friday, when they play at 7:30 p.m. versus the Horizon Christian High Hawks (2-1 league, 4-6 overall) in Hood River. The Huskies follow with a 3:30 p.m. home game Saturday versus the Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (3-1 league, 5-4 overall).
Dufur is also unbeaten in league play at 4-0. Sherman and Dufur play Jan. 20 in Dufur.
Rangers win sixth straight
The No. 12-ranked Dufur High Rangers (4-0 league, 9-2 overall) extended their win streak to six with two Big Sky victories last weekend and solidified their first-place position atop the West Division standings. Dufur won 62-47 at South Wasco County on Jan. 5 in Maupin. Led by senior Olsen Meanus (career-high 24 points), the Rangers built a 16-9 first quarter lead.
Senior Cody Phillips (18 points) and junior Jacob Kent (11 points) also scored in double figures for Dufur. The Redsides were led offensively by junior Storm McCoy (18 points) and senior Joey Holloway (10 points).
One day later, Dufur faced Lyle/Wishram, which came into the key Saturday afternoon matchup unbeaten in league at 3-0. The Rangers played what was probably their best game of the season, winning 84-47 at home.
“The second half was better than the first because our defensive full court press worked better and we moved the ball better on offense,” Coach Hollie Darden said. “When you move the ball better on offense, then you usually get better shots and a better chance of making shots and that’s what we were focusing on doing in the second half.”
Following two deadlocks and two lead changes, the Cougars led 5-4 after a three-point play by senior guard Riley Smith (game-high 30 points). Led by Meanus (23 points), the Rangers had an 18-8 scoring surge, capped by JJ Johnston’s fast break layup. Dufur led by at least nine points after Johnston’s 3-point field goal from the top of the arc.
“It was a good team win, and I thought our guys did play well together and that’s what we’re trying to improve on with the team,” said Darden. “We had a good effort, which was good because when you play a late game like we did the night before [versus South Wasco], sometimes when you come back and play again the next day, sometimes the energy level isn’t quite what you would like to see and that’s why we started out a little flat at the beginning of the game, but then we picked things up.
“We’re just trying to improve every time we go out on the court, whether it’s in practice or in each game.”
Lyle/Wishram gets split
The Cougars got a split of their two Big Sky League contests last weekend, as they recorded an 82-40 home win over the Klickitat/Glenwood High Vandals (0-1 league, 3-6 overall) Jan. 5 at Lyle High School.
The Cougars jumped in front 20-10 after the first quarter. Sophomore Jack Thiemann scored 26 points and freshman Mason Ramsey had 23.
Lyle was scheduled to play at Horizon Christian on Jan. 9.
Horizon wins two straight
The Hawks won two straight Big Sky contests last weekend to solidify their top-three position in the West Division standings. The Hawks won 41-31 at Trout Lake on Jan. 5. Senior Mason Bates led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points, followed by Ben Chapman (11 points) and Landon Whitaker (eight).
The Hawks followed with a Jan. 6, 58-53, home win over South Wasco, which marked Horizon’s first win over the Redsides in nearly four years. Bates led the Hawks with 25 points, Chapman had 13 and Jerry Serrano scored nine. Horizon’s victory snapped a six-game losing streak to the Redsides. The Hawks’ last win over the Redsides was 53-49 on Jan. 21, 2020, in Hood River.
