THE GORGE — A number of Gorge runners competed in the 2024 NXR Northwest Regional Championship for cross country Nov. 16 on a cold day at Eagle Island State Park near Boise, Idaho.
Hood River Valley senior Logan King was the top finisher, placing 64th in the Open 5,000-meter race in 15 minutes, 55 seconds. The open race was won by Tayvon Kitchen of Crater High in 14:53. King led the Eagles to a fourth-place finish Nov. 9 in Class 5A at the OSAA Class 5A state meet by finishing seventh individually.
Hood River’s Valley’s boys team fielded a complete squad at regionals, competing in the division 2 race as Hood River Track Club. Sam Knoll led HRV runners figuring in the team score, finishing 63rd in 17:02. Kai Wagner was 130th (17:40); Copeland Louis 168th (18:04); Davis Kerr 199th (18:30); and Colin Gerald 223rd (18:44). Hood River was 19th out of 35 scoring teams in the race which had more than 300 finishers.
The Dalles runners, Tyson Long and Caleb Caldwell also competed in the division 2 race. Long finished 143rd in 17:47, and Caldwell was 146th in 17:48. They helped The Dalles High to a second- place finish in the Class 4A state meet on Nov. 9.
HRV sophomore Noah Crain finished 151st in 22:03 in the girls division 2 race, and her sophomore teammate Isabella Ulland was 276th in 24:29.
Zimmerman honored for Trico performance
Sophomore Lilah Zimmerman was honored as the Class 1A Trico League’s most valuable player in girls cross country for her performance at the 2024 conference championship meet.
Coach Michael Hannigan was honored as the coach of the year, guiding the Bruin girls to the team title.
Columbia had three runners who earned first-team all-league (top eight at the league finale): senior Noah Slayton; senior Helen Hoskins; and frosh Kathryn O’Connor. The Bruins had two second-teamers (top 15) in sophomore Maya Tama and junior Maisy Kollman. Columbia had six honorable mention picks (top 22): senior Cole Wooding; freshman Heidi Hoppus; sophomore Luther Thomas; senior Damarys Alvarez; freshman Jack Brooks Columbia; and freshman Eda O’Connor.
Both the Columbia High boys and girls teams qualified for the Class 1A state cross country meet.
