THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks split a pair of games last week to solidify their second-place position in the six-team Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference girls basketball standings.
The Riverhawks (4-2 TVC, 14-4 overall) won, 50-39, on Feb. 4 at home over the Molalla High Indians (2-3 TVC, 9-9 overall) for a fourth consecutive victory.
The Riverhawks jumped out to a 15-1 first quarter advantage, capitalizing on 12 Indian turnovers in the first eight minutes, to gain the early advantage. The Indians responded by outscoring the Riverhawks 12-6 in the second, but the Riverhawks regained a double-digit advantage in the third as they built a 36-20 lead.
Midway through the fourth, senior Sydney Newby (game-high 17-points) sank a 3-point field goal to lift the Riverhawks in front with their largest lead, 45-27.
The Riverhawks had three players who scored in double figures, including junior Hailey Johnston (11) and junior Jackie Begay (10).
Two days later in a showdown for first place, the Riverhawks were seeking to extend their win streak to five and move into a tie for first place with Crook County High Cowgirls (6-0 TVC, 11-9 overall). But Crook County outscored The Dalles 12-5 in the final eight minutes to pull out a 39-35 win.
The loss was the Riverhawks’ third defeat this season by four points or less. The Cowgirls’ zone defense was effective in the second half as they held Sydney Newby to four of her 13 points after intermission. The Cowgirls erased a three-point Riverhawk lead with a 10-0 run to go on top 37-30 with 3:31 left in the contest.
Johnston (13 points) sank a three-pointer making it 37-33 with 2:44 left, but that’s as close as The Dalles would get. The Riverhawks had 19 turnovers in the game, which had seven lead changes.
The loss to the Cowgirls was the fifth straight for The Dalles, overlapping the past three seasons. The last Riverhawk victory over the Cowgirls was a, 47-36, home win Jan. 17, 2023.
The Riverhawks were scheduled to play Feb. 11 at La Grande (4-0 Greater Oregon League, 15-3 overall) and at Madras (3-2 TVC, 9-10 overall) on Feb. 13.
