THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls wrestling teams competed in their final Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Class 4A (S04) Special District 4 regular season meet Feb. 8 at the La Pine Frostbite Open Tournament at La Pine High School.
Five girls and 10 boys competed in the tourney for The Dalles.
“The small number of participants we had reflected our low scores and the other teams there had a lot more wrestlers and there were a lot of good wrestlers there,” said Coach Barry Abrams. “The regular season is over now, so we’ll focus on tuning things up a little bit and strategize about how we can focus on the upcoming district meet.”
The Riverhawk girls were led by Kianna Dominguez (106 pounds) and Ivy Laquealla (113 pounds), who each won two-of-four matches to place third in their weight divisions. The Dalles sophomore Sahalle Campos took fifth at 106 pounds. The Riverhawks scored 13.5 points to place seventh out of eight teams in the tourney.
The Dalles girls wrestlers will compete in the SD4 Regional Tournament Feb. 14-15 in La Grande. The top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament Feb. 27-Mar. 1 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
The Riverhawk boys team was led by Harley Scott, who won three-of-four matches to place fifth at 138 pounds. The Dalles sophomore Gabe Phipps (157 pounds) won two-of-three matches to get a fifth-place division finish. Riverhawk sophomore Dante Martinez (165 pounds) won one-of-three matches to get sixth place in his division.
In the heavyweight class, The Dalles freshman Adrian Miramontes took fifth place and sophomore Eoin Herman took fourth place. The Riverhawks scored 45.5 points for an eighth-place finish in the nine-team event.
Abrams said, “We’re hoping to get some of our injured wrestlers healthy and get them back on the mat so they can compete at districts. We’ve had a higher-than-normal number of injuries this year … We’re focused on getting the good prize now, which would be having some wrestlers go to the state tournament.”
The boys squad will compete in the SD4 Regional Tournament Feb. 21-22 in La Grande. The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tourney Feb. 27-Mar. 1 in Portland.
